You must have auto insurance so that you can drive your car. Without that car insurance, you can end up with a fine at best, and at worst, you can end up with a suspended license. If you have had problems with insurance before, you may have to provide a specific form to your state's motor vehicle agency. That particular form is called an SR22.
SR22
You may hear people talking about the SR22 insurance, but it isn't actually the insurance policy. Instead, the SR22 is a certificate provided by your insurance company that says you have an active policy with them. The SR22 may also be called something like a certificate of financial responsibility. It means that your insurance company has you covered and that you have at least the state's minimum insurance limits. In the past, you had to get a physical piece of paper from your insurance agent and take that down to the motor vehicle agency, but these days, it can all be done online. The insurance company just sends the form to the state electronically. Being able to do that can save time for you if you are trying to get your license back.
Higher Premiums
If you have to get an SR22 with your auto insurance, you are likely to have to pay higher premiums. The reason for that is the forms aren't required for people who have a clear driver's license. If you have been ordered by the court to get an SR22, it's because you have done something similar to driving under the influence, have too many traffic tickets, or gotten into too many accidents. While you may have to pay higher premiums at the beginning, after you have had a good driving record and shown that you can be responsible, you may be to talk to the insurance company about lowering your premiums so that it is something that you can afford easier.
Without car insurance, you aren't legally allowed to drive. Every state has a minimum insurance level that you must meet. In some cases, you may have to prove to the state that you have car insurance and can meet the state minimums. In that case, you have to have an SR22. This form is from your insurance company and is given to the state. It is the proof that you have insurance with that particular company and that if you are in an accident, you are covered.
