Covering Members Of Your Family with Insurance

Three Important Parts Of Comprehensive Auto Insurance You Need To Consider Having On Your Policy

by Billie Hughes

Many people understand that both collision and comprehensive coverage are optional parts of a car insurance policy. With collision coverage, you can simply look at the car and ask if it is really worth the extra premium to cover damage to your car. If you're a good driver, you may not be worried. However, comprehensive is a bit different, and you have to look at the various components of comprehensive coverage. There are certain things that you may need from your car insurance. The following are three of them to consider.

Coverage for Theft

Many people dismiss coverage for theft because their car isn't worth that much, so nobody's going to steal it. The problem with this line of thought is that there are many models that are valuable simply for their parts. You may go into a restaurant one evening, then when you leave to the parking lot, you don't find your car. Although the worth of your car was not a predictor for car theft, the parts were valuable. If you get a few quotes, you may find that theft is not that much to add to your policy, especially if your car is old.

Coverage for vandalism

Vandalism can create such serious damage to your car that it will take a lot of money to get it into operational condition. You may be able to start it up and drive down the street, but you will likely be pulled over by a police officer, then given all sorts of fix-it tickets. Damage from vandalism can include broken windows, headlights, and taillights. It also includes slashed tires. These things cost money to fix, but if you are covered by a comprehensive policy, then you don't have to worry so much about it.

Coverage for damage from nature

Another thing you need to consider is damage from nature. If you have your car parked in the driveway or other safe spot, but strong winds from a thunderstorm hit your neighborhood, then this can lead to a tree branch flying into your car, smashing into its body. You may think nothing like that will happen in your area, but it is usually unexpected. If you live in a desert, the winds may kick up one day, and suddenly the sand is blasting your windows. There are many examples of damage that can happen to a car because of nature. It really depends upon where you live, but a comprehensive policy can cover it.

There may be a portion of comprehensive coverage that you are of interest, but not everything that is included in this coverage. It may be possible to simply add one element from comprehensive to your policy. For example, you may be able to add only theft coverage. It depends upon the insurance company. You may find that paying for all components of comprehensive is a good bargain. You will need to get quotations from several insurance companies.
